A Wren's ditch battle plan

2003's The Meadowlands is one of the best records I've ever heard. It's beautiful and world-weary, and incredibly written, and somehow is just an entire stair step above other records of its ilk, in some way I can't define.

I arrived in medias res to the saga of The Wrens, a New Jersey band who have been involved in a record label dispute for many years, which is currently preventing newcomers like me from hearing either of their first two albums, Silver and Secaucus. A campaign has been waged by the faithful to free the catalog, which I hope has some success.

A documentary film of the band and their struggles is in the works, for those interested-- and that should be you, if it isn't already. The site has audio clips which I encourage you to listen to if you are not already a fan.

And, in case you are looking for one more reason to like The Wrens, they write back to dorky fans who send them e-mails.

You should post the e-mail that the Wrens sent you! Man, first Linda Barry, now the Wrens - it's cool to think that there are actually (semi)famous people out there who aren't all scornful and avoid-y toward their fans. Although maybe they only responded because they liked the fan mail you sent them.

uh hi.

on our little tour we had 4 shows with the wrens that pretty much saved the entire trip. not to be dramatic, but they're really incredible live and are wildly charming, nice, very amusing men. and they had a lot of their limbo-esque material for sale, cheep. oops, if only i'd been checking yr blog.

the show in denton was out of control and wonderful, i can't believe the documentarian left her camera behind in austin. charles broke a string and so kevin did a neutral milk hotel cover while chaz restrung; at the 'audience participation' portion, the audience basically didn't leave the stage and the whole thing got even more wild. shirtless kevin, etc. two encores later, charles broke another string and then (in a fit of pique?) broke the other five in short order to put an end to their set.

so good. they're touring again in the fall and may be coming That Far North.

sorry, this is incomprehensible.
